  • Regular supervision and support from your Supervising Social Worker
  • 25 hours co-caring support a month from approved friends or family members (except for specific 11+ Scheme)
  • Activities for birth children and foster children during school holidays
  • Educational support for young people
  • Regular newsletter
  • Foster Carer meetings and other support groups

Training & Development

CANW provides excellent learning & development opportunities tailored to meet your needs. Training begins during the assessment process with our 2 day ‘Skills to Foster’ course. Once approved we then offer a programme of mandatory and supplementary training including: First Aid; Positively Promoting Identity; De-escalation; Safer Caring; Contact with Birth Families and many more. You will be encouraged to attend further training to the equivalent of NVQ Level 3. Training courses are held locally, during the daytime, evenings and weekends and learning can also be completed online.

Financial Support

Our foster carers receive a weekly allowance per child, per week dependent on the type of placement and the age of the child/young person. This is paid directly into the foster carers’ bank accounts on a weekly basis and carers receive a payment advice slip each week. A generous tax relief scheme applies to foster carer payments which often results in nil or minimal tax being payable. If a placement ends and we are unable to find you a suitable new placement, a six week retainer will be paid.

Foster carers receive an allowance for each young person in placement at Christmas or other religious festival celebrated by the fostering family. They will also receive a Birthday allowance to buy gifts for each young person in placement on their birthday.

Foster Carers also receive two weeks paid holiday per year. If you choose to take a child or young person on holiday with you then you may receive a holiday allowance.
